It is always important to put your best foot forward in whatever you are doing. My philosophy has always been---if it’s worth your time and effort to do something, then it’s also worth being or doing the best that you can do. So why stand when greeting someone?
Well, if you remain seated you could send a negative message which simply says, the person you are greeting is not important enough for you to stand. Remaining seated will also put you at a disadvantage; you will not be able to engage eye contact because you will not be at the same level as the person you are greeting. If you can’t stand, is one thing, offer an apology, but if you can, by all means stand.
