Okay, I have been talking about the language of seating in business meetings, obviously there’s more communication going on than we are aware of. And last by not least, there is the autonomous position. This position is across the table and in the position next to the competitive position which is directly across the table of the person directing the meeting. This is the position you would sit in if you do not want to be involved with or share a conversation with the other person. I can see how that can work to your advantage! All of this language of seating is how the businesses can direct or control responses in a meeting through seating arrangements. Chairs in a circle encourage equal contribution while a horseshoe or “T” will recognize and emphasize people at the head of the table. I like what my favorite theater (side-by-side) arrangement says, “You are here to listen, not to talk.”

“You are here to listen, not to talk.” A disappointing term for the poor employees. Everyone should be able to frankly speak out and share their ideas from wherever they may be seated. It does put a good impression on business too.
