Humor is something different to almost everyone, so be careful when using humor in any formal letters, even if the recipient is familiar. My suggestion would be to avoid humor in writing a formal business letter. My husband has such a weird sense of humor to me, when he’s being humorous, he has to sometimes explain it to me, and we are very familiar with each other. I could not imagine being humorous with someone I don’t know or with an acquaintance, therefore business associates are out of the question. It is too easy for someone to misinterpret your humor. It may be considered sarcastic to one and offensive to another. What was innocent could end up being seriously blown out of proportion or the letter could end up in someone else’s hand who may consider it totally inappropriate. Again, my suggestion, stay away from humor in business letters, its way to risky.
