Whether you like or dislike going to office parties is irrelevant because this is a function that everyone should attend unless an emergency or illness keeps them from attending. Remember, the office party is an extension of your job and making an appearance does say that you value your job enough to attend. You don’t have to arrive first and you don’t have to stay the entire time. Arrive early enough for initial greetings and small talk before everyone starts to eat. Be sure to find the host, usually the boss and thank him or her and engage in the customary chit chat, however be considerate, don’t monopolize the host’s time. Don’t go overboard with trying to make a good impression and do the opposite. Be yourself, mingle and introduce yourself to people that you have not met. If you don’t like socializing, grin and bare it and do it anyway. You’ll only have to do it for a couple of hours.
