When I was in college I had a part-time job as a checker at Safeway. I had no prior experience so after training; I desired to be as fast a checker as their fastest checker of 8 years. I challenged myself and became the fastest checker, but I achieved greater success as a checker because I incorporated my social skills with my job and got a raise within 3 months. Eventually I was fired because people would stand in long lines just to get an opportunity to talk with me while other checkers had no customers. By the way, their business increased also. I know this is an extreme example and times have changed, but the basic fundamentals are the same.
