It may appear that there are more eating utensils than needed, but choosing the correct silverware is easy. Becoming familiar with a formal table setting will put you at ease and keep you from focusing on whether or not you have chosen the correct utensil. There could be a possible eleven (11) place setting at a formal table setting. The plate will be directly in front of the diner with the napkin resting on the plate.
- Dinner fork - placed to the left of the plate
- Salad fork – left of the dinner fork
- Dinner knife - placed at the immediate right of the plate
- Soup spoon - right of dinner knife
- Seafood fork - right of soup spoon
- Salad fork/spoon - placed at the top of plate
- Butter plate - placed at the top left of the salad fork/spoon directly over forks
- Sherry glass - placed to the top right of the seafood fork
- White wine glass - placed to the right of the sherry glass
- Red wine glass - placed to the top left on the sherry glass
- Water goblet - placed to the top left of the red wine glass
There you have it. This is your basic table setting, so set your table, learn the placements and positions and let your knowledge communicate effectively no matter what the business social event might be. If all else fails, watch the host and follow suit.
