When people are classified as office jerks, I believe that their behavior is just a camouflage for some deeper problems that exist, but not being dealt with. I think that jerks are very rude and inconsiderate and deserve to suffer the consequences for their behavior rather than ignored. Good management is treating all employees with respect and discovering how to communicate effectively with each individual. And jerks are no exception. Even though they appear to thrive on making everyone around them miserable, when dealing with a jerk, being the bigger person and taking the high road will knock him down a few notches. I like to kill them with kindness and guide them toward a different behavior. For some reason they can’t handle that because they are not familiar with some treating them like they aren’t jerks. So when they are at their worst jerkiness, don’t ignore them, kill them with kindness.
