Bet you didn’t know there was such a thing as napkin etiquette. I wondered if people really pay attention to a small detail like placing your napkin in the right place at the appropriate time. But apparently it can be a big deal at some social gatherings. The only place I have been to where it matters has been a debutante ball; I guess that is a sort of business social gathering. However, these are the rules to follow for proper napkin etiquette. Keeping in mind that your manners and etiquette has a language all of its own. Napkins are placed in your lap immediately after the last person has been seated at your table. Please do not shake your napkin open. For large napkins, the fold goes toward you waist and if you have to leave the table during dinner, place your napkin on your chair or to the left of your plate. When finished eating, place your napkin to the right of the plate. There you have it, proper napkin etiquette.
