10 Steps for Writing Press Releases and Creative Marketing

I am often encouraging you to think, step out of the box and become creative with your marketing plans and strategies for your business.  Now I’m really going to ask you to stretch you faith with your creative marketing.  I posted blogs on leveraging, ‘Press Release Boasts High Level of Customer Satisfaction’ and ‘Corporations Leverages MySpace’, take a look at how you can capitalize on other businesses as a marketing strategy to market your business.  Have you considered a press release as a marketing campaign?  If not than do so, it just might be the ticket to more exposure your business needs.  Here are some tips to writing your best press releases: 

  1. Press releases are utilized to spread the news.  Let your business become the news.  Find a way to tie your business into the news.
  2. Do some research and get a captivating headline that will draw the readers.  
  3. In the first paragraph state a problem that your product or service can solve.  Use the five “W’s” and how to accomplish this.  First paragraph is the “why”.
  4. In the next few paragraphs incorporate the “what” and “who” to solve the problem and in the last paragraph use “when” and “where”.
  5. Keep it short and concise.  Provide contact information on top and bottom of release.
  6. Keep the release fact-based.  Don’t advertise.
  7. Use short quotes that evoke an emotion about your product or service.
  8. Do not make your press release more than one page and follow proper format for writing press releases—remember your business is becoming news.
  9. Include at the bottom of your release details about your company.  Don’t forget to provide a link to your website.  
  10.  Finally, find out the right person in the editing department that addresses your subject.  Submit press release according to their guidelines.
