Assertiveness can help you learn to deal with people demonstrating different communication styles.  When dealing with a passive person, you won’t allow them to remain passive, instead you will encourage them to become a contributor.  Someone who has a passive/aggressive behavior will have to back-off and step up to take responsibility for their behavior forcing them to admit their motivations.  An aggressive communicator will try and force you into a confrontation; however, using your assertiveness to avoid a conflict by calming this type of communicating behavior will almost always win them over to seeing things your way.  You will find that your communication style can be assertive as long as you keep it in context.
