When I was a kid, the adults in my life frequently pointed out two of my dominant traits. One was my full, thick head of hair. The other was that I was a good communicator.
(Okay, in all honesty, I think they said I talked a lot. Of course, I assume they MEANT I was a skilled communicator.)
Now, decades later, at least one of those things has changed. (I'll let you guess which.)
Given my proclivity for the spoken (and written) word, it's not surprising that most of my career has been spent in the roles of marketing and communicating.
But I don't mean the typical, corporate marketing and communications.
Along my path, I have started, built, sold, turned around and managed a variety of businesses. In all this I have focused on marketing and communications as the primary tools of my work.
My experience is from the street. My hands have gotten dirty over the years as I have learned what works and what doesn't as we build relationships and communicate with others.
The quality of our relationships and our ability to communicate will determine how successful we are as we manage our businesses, our careers and our lives. So, it's something I think about, talk about and write about. A lot!
Presently, I am a professional trainer and speaker. I also write a marketing blog for AllBusiness.com. And I have published a book called Marketing for Smart People.
When I'm not working, you'll often find me (and my wife, Debbie) walking our two basset hounds through the streets of Burnsville, Minnesota, where I grew up.
One of my favorite quotes is:
"We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give."
-- Winston Churchill
The most important secret to success in business (and in life) I've learned is to be of service to others by using your talents and skills the best you can.
