My last business was a community-based weekly publication. We generated revenue from ads place by local businesses. So, I worked with a lot of small business owners and, over the years, we created a lot of ads.
Once in awhile I'd find myself scratching my head trying to craft a catchy ad that would really get the reader's attention. I always hated that feeling of being stuck for a good phrase or concept, especially when deadlines loomed.
If only I had known then what I know now.
Recently I stumbled across a funny and useful website called: www.Unwords.com.
Their motto is: "Changing the English language one word at a time."
They have created a great resource for anyone who communicates with words. It's full of made-up words that define all kids of things we deal with, but don't always have a word for.
Here's an example:
Carpal Thumal Syndrome:
1. (n.) A condition of the thumbs that is brought on by the excessive use of a Blackberry or other similar device.
When my brain dries up and I find myself struggling, I take an "Unword" break and surf their website. It always helps me break my creative logjam.
Plus it's a great way to amuse yourself for a few minutes.
