![]() The Ladders, the site for six-figure job searches, has a good (and free!) newsletter, both on the site and free via email. The most recent one I received addressed the issue of creating your own “brand”. Many of us, especially marketers, have heard that one before, but this article, by William Arruda of Reach Communications Consulting has a unique twist. It recommends creating your own personal annual media plan.
What’s in this plan? A statement of purpose, as well as the steps you'll take throughout the year to promote yourself -- including making presentations, making comments on others' blogs, getting head shots, keeping the resume fully updated, updating marketing materials, writing articles, running for a board position…. All the things that make you visible to your many different audiences. And you have the ability to control the tone, pace and frequency of your message.
People who run their own businesses usually try to squeeze at least some of these activities into their dawn to dusk days, but those employed by a company or large corporation shouldn’t ignore the possibilities of a public personality. If you are in the running for another job – with your company or another, the chances are between 60-75% that you will be Googled. If you’re the one who appears with bylines on articles, and a press release for a speech, you instantly earn more credibility.
