![]() Twenty years ago, people who felt unappreciated, underpaid or simply annoyed about the pressures of life at the company stood around the water cooler and said nasty things about the company, imitated the bosses mannerisms and commiserated about how sorry “they” would be when they were gone.
All they had to do is look over their shoulders to be sure they weren’t being overheard, unless they wanted to be. If they were really serious, they feigned an illness, and went on an interview. If they got anywhere at all, they asked the interviewer t call or write them – at home.
Now it’s easy to job shop on the Internet (although because it’s easy, it’s hard to stand out in the huge volume of applicants, but that’s another story…). According to a study done just this month by Hudson North America, “26 percent of workers who believe their internet use is monitored have looked for new career opportunities while at work”.
What?? If you’re trying to tell your boss something, letting him/her discover your unhappiness is the wrong way to go. They may take away the immediate pain, and you’ll feel like you succeeded, but be sure that you will be tagged as immature and expendable when they feel they have other options.
There is no easy way, unless you are trying to bag a summer at the beach collecting unemployment. Discuss your issue with your boss. Show that you’re a reasonable adult who knows how to negotiate and compromise, and they’re likely to understand that you will also do this with clients, co-workers and partners.
