Instant Messaging: Let's Get Back to Simplicity

I’m big on communicating effectively, but not excessively. I say the quickest way is best, as long as it is considerate of the recipient and appropriate to the message.

And Instant messaging is the quickest and easiest in many situations – you can see that your recipient is there and you can have a quick dialogue – even discretely during a dinner or a meeting. When communicating with someone who doesn’t use IM, you can simply send a text message to their cell phone. For those not (yet) using IM, howstuffworks has a detailed article on how it works and what it has done to change and speed up communications.

But good things often aren't left "un-fooled around with". In an LA Times article, David Colker recaps the major IM providers, finding that the set-up and use of this quick and easy communications method is becoming pretty complex. What’s simple about a "quick message" that includes advertisements, audio, video, gaming, photo sharing and more?

And for those using IM for business, there’s more reason to stick to simple messages – security. Spyware and viruses can still intrude, (see Microsoft's cautions and tips) and your recipients want a quick exchange, as in "Can we move lunch to 12:30?", not a show of your technical ability. Check your impulse to get fancy - If something doesn’t truly add value, don’t include it. Just because it’s possible, doesn’t mean that it’s wanted – go for speed, utility and no complications!
